You may understand your patterns and still feel unable to change them

You may have been to therapy, read the books, practiced mindfulness, or learned a long list of coping skills.

You might:

  • Lie awake with racing thoughts

  • Feel tense, panicked, irritable, or overwhelmed

  • Lose your words during conflict

  • Shut down or withdraw from communication

  • Feel numb, heavy, foggy, or disconnected

  • Struggle to focus, make decisions, or complete basic tasks

  • Lose hours scrolling while responsibilities build up

  • Have trouble sleeping, resting, or following through

  • Know what might help, but feel unable to access the skill in the moment

This does not mean you are failing.

Stress can change your access to attention, energy, speech, memory, motivation, and choice.

The Butterfly Blueprint: Foundations will help you understand what is happening and practice ways to respond.

Understand your nervous system through three simple states

Armor.jpg

Armor

Armor is an activated state.

It may show up as anxiety, urgency, muscle tension, racing thoughts, irritability, panic, defensiveness, overthinking, or emotional flooding.

Monarch Butterfly Emerging

Chrysalis

Chrysalis is a shut-down or conserving state.

It may feel like heaviness, exhaustion, numbness, withdrawal, brain fog, low motivation, disconnection, or difficulty finding words.

Flight

Flight is a state where you have more access to connection, curiosity, boundaries, expression, rest, and choice.

Flight does not mean feeling calm all the time. It means having more capacity to notice what is happening and respond in a way that supports you.

What you will learn:

Over four weeks, you will learn how to:

  • Recognize hyperarousal, hypoarousal, and more connected states

  • Notice your personal triggers and early warning signs

  • Understand why stress affects work, sleep, relationships, focus, and daily functioning

  • Practice a range of body-based regulation skills

  • Learn which tools feel supportive for your individual nervous system

  • Choose a skill based on the state you are in

  • Build a personal toolkit of three to five practices

  • Respond to activation or shutdown with less confusion and self-blame

This course is not about staying regulated every moment of the day.

It is about noticing sooner, responding more intentionally, and building a more reliable path back to choice.

The 4-week curriculum:

Week 1: What state am I in?

Learn how the nervous system responds to stress, safety, and perceived threat.

We will explore:

  • Hyperarousal and hypoarousal

  • Armor, Chrysalis, and Flight

  • How each state affects thoughts, emotions, behavior, and energy

  • Personal triggers and early warning signs

  • Why your reactions can change quickly

Practice Focus: Orientation to the present environment, including the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise.

Week 2: How can I influence my state?

Learn how breath, sound, movement, pressure, and sensory information may affect nervous system state.

We will explore:

  • The vagus nerve and the autonomic nervous system

  • How breathing patterns may influence arousal

  • Why one practice may help one person and feel uncomfortable for another

  • How to experiment without forcing yourself to calm down

  • How to modify or stop a practice that does not feel supportive

Practice Focus: Box breathing, longer exhalations, straw-style exhalation, humming, orientation, and grounding through pressure.

Week 3: Why does stress affect my functioning?

Learn why stress can change your ability to think, communicate, rest, focus, start tasks, and use coping skills.

We will explore:

  • Why insight can become harder to access during stress

  • How stress affects attention, memory, speech, and decision-making

  • Why people freeze, overreact, withdraw, or lose their words

  • How nervous system states affect work, sleep, relationships, and daily routines

  • Why self-criticism can make regulation harder

Practice Focus: Noticing body sensations without immediately attaching a story, followed by experiments with different regulation tools.

Week 4: What works for my individual system?

Bring the course together and create a practical plan for daily life.

We will explore:

  • Why different states need different kinds of support

  • How timing, intensity, environment, and personal history affect a skill

  • How to tell whether a practice is helpful, neutral, or unhelpful

  • What progress can realistically look like

  • How to continue practicing after the course ends

Practice Focus: Choosing your preferred tools, building a personal toolkit, and creating a simple plan for moments of activation or shutdown.

What each class looks like:

Each live online class is two hours long. We will start with a grounding practice before transitioning to nervous system education.

The first half of each session focuses on nervous system education.

You will learn the week’s main concepts and connect them to real experiences such as work stress, conflict, sleep problems, shutdown, overwhelm, and difficulty following through.

The second half focuses on somatic skills.

You will have time to try different exercises, notice how your body responds, and reflect on what may be useful for you.

You will never be required to disclose personal history, push through dysregulation or continue an exercise that does not feel right.

The goal is not to perform every practice perfectly.

The goal is to notice what happens, learn from the response, and keep what helps.

What is included:

Your enrollment includes:

  • Four live online group sessions

  • Two hours of instruction each week

  • Eight total hours of education and guided practice

  • Access to session recordings

  • A digital copy of the Butterfly Blueprint Workbook

  • Nervous system mapping and reflection exercises

  • Practice with several somatic skills

  • A personal toolkit of three to five practices

  • A simple response plan for activation and shutdown

This is especially supportive for people shaped by chronic stress, trauma, high responsibility, marginalization, or survival mode living.

Investment: $444

Who this course is for:

The Butterfly Blueprint: Foundations may be a good fit for you if:

  • Your nervous system regularly affects work, rest, sleep, relationships, or daily functioning

  • You move between anxiety, urgency, overwhelm, exhaustion, numbness, or shutdown

  • You are interested in understanding your nervous system

  • You have tried therapy, coaching, mindfulness, or other healing work and want a body-based approach

  • You want practical skills, not information alone

  • You are willing to experiment and learn what works for your system

  • You want to respond to yourself with more understanding and less shame

You do not need previous experience with somatic work or therapy.

You do not need to arrive calm, confident, or highly functional.

You simply need enough capacity to participate in an educational group program.

This approach is bottom up, not willpower based.

We are not forcing calm.
We are building choice.

You do not have to explain your trauma to benefit from this.
You do not have to relive anything to begin shifting your system.

When this program may not be the right fit:

The Butterfly Blueprint: Foundations is an educational somatic skills course. It is not psychotherapy, crisis care, medical treatment, or a replacement for individualized mental health support.

This program may not be appropriate when you:

  • Are currently experiencing an acute mental health crisis

  • Need immediate or intensive individual support

  • Are looking for trauma processing rather than education and stabilization skills

  • Are seeking diagnosis or medical treatment

  • Are unable to participate safely in a group learning environment

Please contact a qualified healthcare professional or emergency service when urgent or individualized care is needed.

Meet your facilitator

My name is Tobey Hale

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, psychedelic therapist, and integration coach. I hold an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in Mindfulness-Based Transpersonal Counseling from Naropa University.

The Butterfly Blueprint grew out of both my professional work and my own experience with burnout.

For a time, I was working as an equine therapist at a residential treatment center. In many ways, it was my dream job. I cared deeply about the work and felt honored to support people through some of the hardest moments of their lives. I was working every day with the horses and getting to share their amazing co-regulatory power with my clients as they navigated substance abuse issues and resolving incredibly profound traumas. This was everything that I had gone to school for and spent thousands of hours training to do. I should have been lit up and thriving.

But when I came home, my own nervous system told a different story.

Some days, I felt incredibly anxious, tense, and unable to settle. Other days, I shut down completely. I would come home exhausted, disconnected, and without the energy to participate in my own life.

That experience was difficult to make sense of. How could I be doing meaningful work that I loved and still feel so depleted?

I had clinical training. I understood trauma, stress, and coping skills. I could explain what was happening intellectually, but understanding it did not automatically change what was happening in my body.

After I left the residential treatment center, I finally had the time and spaciousness to figure out how to move beyond a nervous system that no longer seemed to know up from down.

I intentionally slowed down.

Instead of pushing through or judging myself for how I felt, I began listening to my nervous system patterns and warning signs. I paid attention to what happened before I became overwhelmed, what happened before I shut down, and what helped me feel more present again.

Over time, I realized I did not need more information alone. I needed practical ways to recognize the state I was in and respond to what my nervous system actually needed.

That process changed the way I understood burnout, anxiety, and shutdown. It also changed the way I worked with others.

Throughout my career, I have worked in high-acuity residential care, equine-assisted settings, psychedelic harm reduction, sanctuary support, and festival-based peer care. My approach brings together clinical science, somatic practice, mindfulness, EMDR, harm reduction, psychedelic-assisted therapy, and integration.

The Butterfly Blueprint grew from that work.

I help people understand what their nervous system is communicating, practice skills that fit the state they are in, and build greater capacity for safety, connection, and choice.

I created The Butterfly Blueprint: Foundations for people who are thoughtful, self-aware, and trying hard, but still find that their nervous system gets in the way of work, rest, relationships, or daily life.

Transformation is not only a change in mindset. It is a reclamation of your ability to participate in your life.
